Fretta Cravens

Fretta Cravens is an internationally known Portland,Oregon fine art photographer and visual artist who loves nature, beauty, and the beauty of nature. Her work is a response to a world that is sometimes filled with chaos and ugliness. In college at the University of Texas at Arlington while receiving her BFA with majors in Drawing, Photography and Paper Making she was inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe. Not only by her paintings but her statement, “I have but one desire as a painter-that is to paint what I see,as I see it,in my own way.” As a non-traditional photographer she adheres to ”in my own way.” Fretta uses a flatbed scanner to capture and amplify the unseen beauty of the flora that surrounds us, inviting each viewer to become more fully engaged with their senses. Subtly confrontational, details are revealed, and a dialogue begins with the flora that will never wilt or fade. The viewer and nature become equals, both deserving of care and study. Her archival dye pigment photographs are printed in house. They are exhibited throughout the United States in galleries and arts festivals. Her works are also exhibited and collected in France, England, Spain and Switzerland. She is represented by Portland Art Museum Rental Sales Gallery, Portland, Oregon.
