Terry Thompson and JIm Fitzgerald • Winter: Y2Y
Please join us for the Artists’ Opening Reception on Saturday, July 11 from 4-7pm
The combined forces of Terry Thompson and Jim Fitzgerald gave rise to their show known as Winter: Y 2 Y. Their images that capture the feeling of light, bitter cold and subtle details of their environments are presented as Platinotypes and carbon transfer contact prints.
Rich with precious metals and displaying special techniques developed over many decades, Terry Thompson’s Platinotypes are unique, one-of-a-kind glimpses into the frozen world of Yellowstone. The challenges of working with film in sub zero temperatures are many; but the desire to complete his vision overcomes all of these obstacles. His prints, made by hand, exhibit his connection to the environment.
Meanwhile, the delicate richness of Jim Fitzgerald’s carbon transfer prints transport the viewer through the corners of Yosemite which are only accessible in the cold frozen days of winter. Each hand-made carbon transfer print is a testament to the beauty of this frozen landscape. Utilizing unique pigments and special formulas, known only to the artist, the luminous icicles in the frozen waters of Bridalveil creek and rare seasonal snow melts of El Capitan meadow glisten against the steadfast Black Oaks in a three dimensional dance of light.
The images of harsh winters of Yellowstone and Yosemite are but a glimpse of their natural beauty that they desperately need to preserve. Everyone must make every effort necessary to save people’s National Parks and environment from the ravages of mankind. Winter: Y 2 Y is a reminder of the power of Mother Nature, a power that can be subtle or devastating.
