The Spirit Seed
As The Mona Lisa summons your attention with her smile, it’s easy to overlook that she, too, is looking at us. And so it is with The Spirit Seed. But for both, what meaning lies beneath that enigmatic, quiet presence? We know The Mona Lisa is Leonardo Da Vinci’s masterpiece. But what do we know of The Spirit Seed, a masterpiece of Nature?
We know it was given to Michael Granger over 40 years ago, in Hawaii, as an object with special meaning, We know that Michael has cherished it all these years as a talisman, an object to protect and bring good fortune, like a crucifix, a buddhist enso, or your grandmother’s wedding ring.
Each photographer in this series was given The Spirit Seed for up to one week, to experience and interpret whatever mystery they felt thrumming from within its core. Some felt a mysterious energy. Some marveled at the perfect symmetry of its skin. Some saw it as a metaphor for the hubris of colonialism. As this masterpiece of Nature summons your gaze, what do you see, and what is your response?
