Thank you so much to LightBox Gallery for the opportunity to jury the 2021 Alternative Processes Serendipitous Eye Exhibition. I am honored to help celebrate this wonderful organization and community that I admire and believe in.
It’s an honor and a privilege to be able to view lots of well crafted works that reflect each person’s unique world view as seen through the photographic process be it with camera or without. Making art is an act of courage and I value the work of everyone who submitted for this exhibition. In jurying, all approaches to the photographic medium are merged together and stand together all with equal integrity and the process of selecting work from this diverse collection of images was not an easy task. I am humbled and inspired by this experience and am fully convinced that photography is alive and well with so much inspiring work.
Photography is a universal language that has an incredible power to connect us in unique and profound ways. It is a conversation with light and time that can become a record of our unique visual experiences. It is important to acknowledge that there are qualities that are universal to creating compelling work. Images are unique and have an intangible voice that holds the potential of linking image and idea. Craft is essential for conveying the integrity of ideas whether they be simple or complex. In my decisions, I was drawn to images that challenged, transported, elevated and delighted along with a unique perspective and authenticity. These qualities are essential in making profound images that speak to viewers.
The nature of jurying is subjective and not an easy task. I found so much compelling work and had to let go of so many images that spoke to me but there was far more work than what the gallery could hold and all of it was excellent in its’ own way. In this exhibition there was so much more work that I wish I could have included. I’d like to extend special congratulations to everyone included in the exhibition and extend a huge thank you to everyone who responded to this call for entry. It was an honor to view your work and I am honored to have had the opportunity to have spent time with it.
