Michael Puff • Looking Back

For years we have exhibited the gorgeous Platinum Palladium prints of Michael Puff at LightBox, we are very excited to feature his work in this exhibit, Looking Back.

The prints in “Looking Back” are some of my favorite figurative images from the past 10+ years printing in the historic platinum/palladium process. I’m partial to images which are like theater, innovative, thought-provoking, and play with reality and illusion. The dancers and movers photographed in these prints are among my most cherished collaborations.

Platinum/Palladium: The process is defined by hand-coating cotton rag artist’s paper with a mixture of photosensitive platinum/palladium metals. The emulsion impregnates the fibers of the paper itself. Using a negative the same size as the final print laid in direct contact with the sensitized paper, the image is exposed with ultraviolet light. After exposure, the photograph is developed and then cleared of unused emulsion. This marriage of the paper and noble metal renders a print with extended tonal range, warm color, and permanence.
