Artist Statement
I grew up in the rough and tumble of deep South Texas where I spent a childhood blessedly free and
driven by my imagination. My new and ongoing body of work, Mythos, taken in part from childhood
memories, is born of an awareness of the power in the stories we tell ourselves and others, forming
personal truths and modern day folklore. Each image is its own tale, pulling from fragments of
memory and figments of imagination, to tell stories both true and imagined.

Process Statement
The images are sometimes, but not always, constructions of several images. Each one starts out
as handwritten notes about a particular memory or imagining from my childhood, forming a narrative
for the image. As the story unfolds, I begin photographing. Often times I go back and re-photograph
an element over and over until it becomes clear as to what it should be. The journey from concept to
finish seems to have a mind all its own, as if the story wants to be told as much as I want to do the
telling. All images are printed individually, with archival pigment inks on cotton rag, signed, numbered
and dated on verso.

Bio
Born and raised in Texas, my home is in Austin, close to the Hill Country. My college years were
spent at The University of Texas, although my interest in photography began later. For much of my
adult life I have pieced together an ongoing photographic education, including formal classes,
workshops and continuous self-education. My early photographic experience began when I
became interested in photographing my children, young at the time, in a less traditional way than
was commonly seen. Soon I began a small portrait photography business, with an emphasis on
photographing children using natural light. I was also fortunate to photograph in my children’s
school, which led to regular submissions of environmental imagery of children to my local news
paper. My work has been shown nationally in juried group exhibitions and invitational group
exhibitions. I have received numerous awards including selection as a Photo Review 2010
Competition Winner, a 2009 Photolucida Critical Mass Finalist and a 2008 Review Santa Fe
participant. Today I engage photography as a means of story telling and self expression, and as a
way of seeing my world.
