He attended Stanford University and graduated from Bethel College. After flirtations with math and science he accumulated enough credits to graduate as a history major with a minor in art.
Professionally he has worked as a photographer and book editor, specializing in chemistry and computer science. In 1985 he launched a computer science book publishing company, Franklin, Beedle & Associates. He is Chamber Music Northwest’s festival photographer.
He is a photography activist. In 2000 he was among the group that formed the Photography Council of the Portland Art Museum and now serves as board President. From 2005 to 2008 he was on Photolucida’s board and has been a Critical Mass juror.
