Matthew Ragen
Matt Ragen is a fine art photographer whose work reinterprets what he sees through the lens into what he feels in his soul. In the early years of this millennium, he rediscovered photography after 20+ years of being a parent and building a career in high-tech marketing and business management. Digital photography allowed Matt to fulfill his creative spirit. Since he was not tied to a darkroom, regardless of whether he was at home or traveling on business, he was able to complete photographic images anywhere, anytime. Several years later, he relearned analog film processes to slow down so that he could see more of what he was looking at through the viewfinder. With film, time became fluid and viscous and this perspective led Matt to progress from traditional silver gelatin darkroom processing towards historic alternative processes such as platinum/palladium, cyanotype, bromoil, and salt prints. He is now equally adept with both digital and analog film processes and often completes photographs using a combination of those processes in order to get the texture and control of the final images that he believes should be in the prints to create the sense of emotion and feeling that bring the prints to life. He currently prints in his home darkroom in Seattle, Washington. His formal training includes one class in black and white photography in college and the full curriculum at the Photographic Center Northwest in Seattle where, with occasional classwork, he is completing a certificate program in fine art photography.
