Painted Hills 1
“Painted Hills #1” is part of a series of platinum/palladium prints celebrating the unique beauty of The Painted Hills Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, in eastern Oregon. These hills are distinguished by the subtle stripes of red and yellow clay and the sensuous curves formed by eons of erosion.
I am a believer that the print is photography’s true expression, and that the hand-made print is is my true expression as a photographer. My work ranges from platinum/palladium prints to gum prints and photogravure. It is my intention to choose the medium as feels right, to me, for the subject.
For the Painted Hills project I selected platinum/palladium as the medium of choice. Platinum/palladium prints have the tonal range capable of expressing the textures of the layered clay soil, and the depth of the shadowed canyons. Platinum/palladium prints can also convey the starkness of this landscape while allowing its’ unique beauty to show through.
