“and she was” - Suzanne Goodwin – Vancouver, BC - Legends, fables and lore so often figure trees as part of their narrative, finding them often in the dark and gnarled places where within we may fear to tread. Although these stories assign the tree and the forest a nature and aspect unlikely to exist in reality, I’ve long been fascinated with the idea of such things. In wanderings through forests, I sometimes think the presence of the trees is felt as much as it is seen. Such invisible qualities draw us in and invite our imagination to lend its’ own ideas as to the character of these beings. The subject of this image exuded a decidedly old, powerful and not altogether kind female energy in an otherwise bright and pleasant wood. She was dark, deeply rooted and mysterious. This portrait is a daydream of her real and arcane nature.
