jenn walton - January 11, 2013 - Dichotomy, the splitting of a whole into exactly two non-overlapping parts, meaning it is a procedure in which a whole is divided into two parts. En.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dichotomy Raft is a series of photographs featuring a woman on a raft with herself. The wooden raft is a strong support that gives the two women a sense of security while they pass the time together as one individual with different interests. My images are photo-based, captured on a camera and then manipulated in Photoshop. My early work was heavily influenced by digital manipulation but now I prefer to shoot with the final work primarily captured in camera and only slight adjustments in the software. This image was chosen because it has beautiful light qualities and a setting that only nature could provide (that said from a photo technicians point of view). The raft symbolizes the base that you build to survive daily life, the two women symbolize the human dichotomy, a division of focus that pulls us in different directions day by day. I am a very unfocused photo/artist when it comes to subject matter. Everything around me fascinates me and begs to be recorded. My biggest challenge is how to record it with technical accuracy and also with an appropriate interpretation. I have been influenced by many artists but the folk style paintings and books of William Kurelek, Alberta (1927-77) and the conceptual art style of Rodney Graham, Vancouver BC 1949-present has been a strong influence on my work . Photography allows me to study the world in small sections, revealing reflections of my own human dichotomy. - jenn walton digiwerx studio vancouver, british columbia www.digiwerxstudio.com 604-202-5679
