Friderike Heuer - Feux Follets (Will o'the Wisp/Irrlichter) are strange lights that can be seen occasionally when wandering the forests, fens and bogs of Northern Europe. Although gaseous by nature, they have been seen as otherworldly portents or signs from the spirits in people's imagination. The 17x14 photomontages, archival ink jet prints on German etching paper, play with this concept. I immigrated to the US from Germany in 1981; after receiving a Ph.D. from the New School of Social Research in New York in experimental psychology, I taught Visual Perception and Cognition at both the graduate and undergraduate levels for 15 years. My work with photomontages is often text-based, “translating” poems or other writings into images. My work is primarily concerned with issues of justice, both historically and in contemporary settings, and the consequences of exile and emigration. But I have also been working on images of nature as perceived through the lens of people's imagination.
